Finding combinations can get quite tricky. It’s a daily endeavor that makes fashion-conscious males highly aware of their appearance. The battle between sophistication and being a clown is a fine line that all fashion-conscious men must walk. While I am no expert, I can tell you what combinations look bad, and you do not have to be an expert to see when specific patterns, materials, and colors do not go well together.

The way clothes look is a big deal; for instance, some men wear bow ties that extend past their ears. But, if you were making a case for Bozo the clown, then you made your point!

The reality is that dressing takes some forethought. So when you are picking an outfit, make sure you look at the patterns, materials, and colors and see how they complement or contrast each other. Are you wearing the item properly? Is the material or color appropriate for the climate or weather?

Be an observer of fashionable men you see walking around New York or any city where men’s wear is part of the culture (don’t stare, that isn’t polite). See how other men wear their clothes. You will find many good combinations by observing well-dressed men. Check out what looks good on them, the colors, patterns, and yes, even the material all has a bearing on how the final combination will look and feel.

Just as a side note, I am not compensated by any of the sites mentioned. However, I ran my fashion blog for 16 years and have photographed thousands of well-dressed men and fashions so I can speak with some authority.

When I want to see classic men’s wear, I tend to go to these websites. I find these more to my liking, but there are many more, but I am listing the ones that I often visit.

Step outside your comfort zone and experiment but do not go wild and lose all self-control. Dressing well is a statement that you have good judgment when it comes to style. So experiment and have fun but don’t look like a clown when you are out and about.
